Issue 425: definition of Ixx Situation in CRMinf

ID:
425
Starting Date:
2019-06-13
Working Group:
3
Status:
Done
Background:

In the 44th joint meeting of the CIDOC CRM SIG and ISO/TC46/SC4/WG9; 37th FRBR - CIDOC CRM Harmonization meeting, AK’s request that O14 initializes (is initialized by) [D:E5 Event, R:S16 State] be updated to O14 initializes (is initialized by) [D:E5 Event, R:E3 Condition State], gave rise to a long discussion regarding the incorporation of states-like classes in the CRM –base and family models –and where these should be placed.
The sig decided that O14 should be deprecated in CRMsci. It is to be reinstated in CRMinf, taking as range Ixx Situation or some other relevant class.
The notes from the meeting are here. Issue 414 is closed, discussions regarding the range of O14 are to be subsumed in Issue 329.

HW: SS is to come up with the definition of Ixx Situation in CRMinf.

Paris, June 2019

Current Proposal:

In the 45th joint meeting of the CIDOC CRM SIG and SO/TC46/SC4/WG9; 38th FRBR – CIDOC CRM Harmonization meetingthe sig reviewed the definition of Ixx Situation (HW by SS), edited and accepted it. HW was assigned to  AK to find the reference to Gangemi's paper and TV to find an example related to a time span.

My homework was to find the reference for situation:

  • A. Gangemi and P. Mika. Understanding the semantic web through descriptions and situations. In Proceedings of DOA/CoopIS/ODBASE 2003 Confederated International Conferences DOA, CoopIS and ODBASE, LNCS. Springer, 2003.

Gangemi situation is defined as: “the notion of “situation” as a Unitarian entity out of a “state of affairs”. The unity criterion is provided by a “description. A description is an entity that partly represents a (possibly formalized) theory T (or one of its elements) that can be “conceived” by an agent: either human, collective, social, or artificial. A situation is constituted by the entities and the relations among them that are mentioned in assertions.
Example: a clinical condition, a climate change history, etc.
Intuitively, when a description is applied to a state of affairs, some structure (a “situation”) emerges…”

Dear all, Steve,

In the last meeting I was asked to provide an example for I11 Situation from the domain of conservation. I am proposing this one:

"The persistence of the value of the pH (E55) for sample XIV (S13) during the period of the pH measurement (E52), which followed after one month from the application of Ca(OH)2 dispersion to the sample."1

Dear Thanasi,

I think we decided not to fill the class examples with e-numbers of things within the noun phrase. Otherwise I agree.

I believe we need a property "Jxxx held at least for: E52 Time-Span"

"This property associates an instance of I11 Situation with the instance of E52 Time-span for which it was asserted. It constitutes part of the identity of this situation. Any different association of a time-span even to the same constituting propositions of this situation will identify another instance of I11 Situation.

Note that the respective situation may have had shorter duration than the one given by the property P82 at some time within to the associated time-span, but the same propositions may quite well have prevailed for longer and other times. In order to make a statement about how long at least the propositions of that situation uninterruptedly prevailed, the property P81 ongoing throughout should be used for the associated time-span.

There is no means to declare that the propositions of that situation did not occur again ouside the given time-span."

Best,

Martin

Outcome:

In the 50th joint meeting of the CIDOC CRM SIG and SO/TC46/SC4/WG9; 43nd FRBR – CIDOC CRM Harmonization meeting, TV presented HW that he and AK had prepared for the issue:

  • provide a reference to a paper:
    A. Gangemi and P. Mika. Understanding the semantic web through descriptions and situations. In Proceedings of DOA/CoopIS/ODBASE 2003 Confederated International Conferences DOA, CoopIS and ODBASE, LNCS. Springer, 2003.
  • come up with an example for I11 Situation:
Example: the persistence of the value of the pH for sample XIV during the period of the pH measurement, which took place one month after the application of Ca(OH)2 dispersion to the sample (Giori et al., 2002)
    • reference: Rodorico Giorgi, Luigi Dei, Claudius Schettino & Piero Baglioni (2002) A NEW METHOD FOR PAPER DEACIDIFICATION BASED ON CALCIUM HYDROXIDE DISPERSED IN NONAQUEOUS MEDIA, Studies in Conservation, 47:sup3, 69-73, DOI: 10.1179/sic.2002.47.s3.014

NOTE: a property linking I11 to the timespan for which it held is still missing. To be resolved in a new issue (550).

Decision: Accept the example. Details for discussion/decision here.
