Issue 283: Add superproperties to properties of CRMarcheo

Starting Date:
Working Group:
Closing Date:

In 33rd meeting the crm - sig decided reviewing the CRM archeo one of the comments was that it should be added suproperties to find the supeproperties / subproperties  of CRMarcheo.

Nuremebrg May 2015

Current Proposal:

In the 36th joined meeting of the CIDOC CRM SIG and ISO/TC46/SC4/WG9 and the 29th FRBR - CIDOC CRM Harmonization meeting the discusion about finding supeproperties / subproperties  of CRMarcheo was continued and it is observed that there are  some inconsistencies. For example in order to be AP10 destroyed (was destroyed by) isA P13 destroyed (was destroyed), it should be  A1 Excavation Process Unit isA E6 Destruction. This change is accepted

The crm-sig proposed the  work on this continues and these will be sorted out through the process of making new editions and passing them to FORTH for presentation in RDFS format.

Heraklion 1-8-2016

In the 40th joined meeting of the CIDOC CRM SIG and ISO/TC46/SC4/WG9 and the 33nd FRBR - CIDOC CRM Harmonization meeting, HW is assigned to Achille and George to make a proposal about superproperties in CRMarchaeo.

Cologne, January 2018

In the 42nd joined meeting of the CIDOC CRM SIG and ISO/TC46/SC4/WG9 and the 35th FRBR - CIDOC CRM Harmonization meeting, Achille presented his homework on supeproperties for CRMarchaeo properties. AF and GB who were assigned to find superproperties to the CRMarcheo properties, worked around the problem by proposing that A1 production be listed as a subclass of E81 Transformation. The crm-sig rejected this solution and proposed that a different solution be explored. AF should rework the solution, along the lines proposed in the meeting. Also, GB is assigned with consistently changing S16 to an updated E3 Condition State. The details of the discussion may be found here.

Berlin, November 2018

In the 43rd joint meeting of the CIDOC CRM SIG and ISO/TC46/SC4/WG9; 36th FRBR - CIDOC CRM Harmonization meeting. Going through the new text for CRMarcheo, the sig discussed the proposal put forth by MD to declare A7 Embedding a subclass of R20 Rigid Physical Feature instead of E3 Condition State. This proposal is accepted by sig.
The sig decided that properties of CRMarcheo found below, need to be associated with appropriate superproperties:
•    AP15 [is or contains remains of (is or has remains contained in) D: A2 Stratigraphic Volume Unit, R: S10 Material Substantial],
•    AP19 is embedding in *contains embedding) [D: A7 Embedding, R: A2 Stratigraphic Volume Unit],
•    AP20 is embedding at (contains) [D:A7 Embedding, R: E53: Place],  and
•    AP21 contains (is contained in) [D: A2 Stratigraphic Volume Unit, R: E18 Physical Thing]
HW: CEO is to update the text of CRMarcheo and edit A7 and relevant properties, add superproperties to properties of CRMarcheo that are still missing and check whether properties AP11 has physical relation (is physical relation of), AP13 has stratigraphic relation (is stratigraphic relation of) and AP14 justified by (is justification of) map to CRMinf properties.

Homework for ISSUE 283 “Add superproperties to properties of CRMarcheo”

All properties A1 to A21 in CRMarcheo have been checked

The following are ok:

AP1, AP2, AP3, AP5, AP6. AP7, AP8, AP10, AP11, AP12, A14, AP15, AP16, AP19, AP20   are ok as they are.

******** Comments:

AP13  ok, I cannot see generalizing  superproperty

AP14 is a very special property between properties, no superproperty

AP15 no superproperty, ok

AP19 is embedding in (contains embedding)

Domain: A7 Embedding

Range:   A2 Stratigraphic Volume Unit

This one is slightly interesting. A7 is a subclass of E3 Condition state and A2 is an indirect subclass of E23 Place. This property assigns instances of a subclass of E23 Place to instances of E3 Condition state, which in general is not considered to have location. AP19 has no superproperty

AP20 has no superproperty, same argument as above.

******** Suggested changes

AP4 produced surface (was surface produced by)

Domain:                A1 Excavation Process Unit

Range:                  S20 Rigid Physical FeatureA10 Excavation Interface

Subproperty of:   O2 removed (was removed by)
This is not a subproperty of O2. It is clear that  when a surface is produced one usually has to remove matter. However, the surface is produced and not removed. If it is a subproperty it should be a suproperty of

P108 has produced (was produced by): E24 Physical Human-Made Thing

AP17 is found by (found)

Domain: A7 Embedding

Range:    S19 Encounter Event

Subproperty of:  O8 observed (was observed by)

A7 is a subclass of E3 Condition State and not of A13 Attribute assignment. AP17 is a subproperty of O8 inverse.

AP18 is embedding of (is embedded)

Domain: A7 Embedding

Range:    E18 Physical Thing

Subproperty of:  P44 has condition (is condition of)

Same argument as for AP17, it is a subproperty of P44 inverse

AP21 contains (is contained in)

Domain: A2 Stratigraphic Volume Unit

Range:   E18 Physical Thing

Since A2 is a subclass of E23 Place, it could be a subproperty of  the inverse of

P53 has former or current location (is former or current location of)

In the 45th joint meeting of the CIDOC CRM SIG and SO/TC46/SC4/WG9; 38th FRBR – CIDOC CRM Harmonization meetingthe sig reviewed the HW by CEO and decided to accept his suggestions for CRMarcheo properties AP3, AP4, AP6, AP7, AP8, AP9, AP11, AP12, AP13, AP14, AP15, AP16.  Of those some don’t require be declared subproperties of a property different than the one they have already been assigned with, whereas others do.  The decisions for each one of the above properties are described here

Furthermore the sig decided to raise  new issues about :

a.  The nature of A1 Excavation Process Unit (isA E12 Production or isA S1 Matter Removal).

b. A7 Embedding as a Physical Feature like entity –not a temporal one.

c. O17 isA O18

 The issue closed
