Issue 539: Examples of AP7 -reference to the excavation records from Akrotiri

ID:
539
Starting Date:
2021-05-18
Working Group:
4
Status:
Done
Background:

The updated example for AP7 produced (was produced by) is to a large extent fictitious [*], in that it does not refer to any of the acutal layers of pumice and volcanic ash that covered Akrotiri as a result of the Thera eruption.

[*] The Thera eruption (ca. 1600BCE) (A4) produced layers of pumice and volcanic ash that covered the ancient city of Akrotiri (A8) [see Fig.5, 8] (Doumas, 2015).

HW: CB is to contact Eleni Ch., to get access to the original data found in the excavation reports for Akrotiri.

HW: AK: to update the examples accordingly

Current Proposal:

In the 50th joint meeting of the CIDOC CRM SIG and SO/TC46/SC4/WG9; 43nd FRBR – CIDOC CRM Harmonization meeting, AK presented the state of the issue.
According to what had previously been decided, Eleni Christaki was going to provide information re. the identity of the volcanic ash and pumice layers in the excavation reports from Akrotiri. However, she reported back that the identity of such layers is not documented in the original records.

Decision

  • Circumvent this problem by adding a sentence in the example mentioning something along the lines of:
“The Archival Material is taken from the excavation records held by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades”.

HW: SdS to reformulate the clause.

June 2021

Outcome:

In the 52nd joint meeting of the CIDOC CRM SIG and ISO/TC46/SC4/WG9; 45th FRBR - CIDOC CRM Harmonization meeting; SdS reformulated the example by AK for AP7 produced.

  • The layers of pumice and volcanic ash, about one metre thick, covering the ancient city of Akrotiri (A8) was produced by the eruption of the volcano on Santorini in 17th-15thcentury BCE (A4) (see Fig. 8). [Based on the excavation records held in the archives of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades]

DECISION: the example was accepted following minor editing .
